The brief was straightforward in theory but more complex in practice: provide safe, fully compliant scaffolding across a large commercial roof with multiple pitches and gables, while the pub below remained open for business throughout. That last part is what separates a well-planned commercial scaffold from a poorly planned one. Nobody wants barriers, debris or unsafe access points spoiling the experience for customers walking through the front door.
The Challenge
The property had a complex roof line — multiple pitched sections, gables at different heights and an oak-framed entrance canopy that required careful positioning to avoid. Blue debris netting was installed across all elevated sections to protect the building, the outdoor seating area and anyone on site below. With a beer garden in regular use and customers coming and going throughout the working week, getting the scaffold footprint right from day one was essential.
How We Approached It
Our team carried out a full site assessment before erecting anything, mapping out the scaffold design around the building’s layout and the pub’s operational requirements. We worked with the client to agree on erection timing that minimised disruption to opening hours, and ensured all ground-level uprights and bases were positioned safely away from pedestrian routes and the outdoor seating area.
The result was a full perimeter commercial scaffold covering all elevations of the roof, with blue debris netting throughout, safe ladder access to all working levels and a clean, tidy site at ground level — with the pub’s “We Are Open” sign doing exactly what it was supposed to do throughout the project.
